Former FBi Independent Artist of the Week Jess Locke joined Stephen Ferris in the studio on Mornings, stopping by as she tours the country in support of her new single ‘Better/Bitter’. They talked all about her songwriting process, what to expect from her upcoming record and how the tour’s been going so far.

Playing two stripped back tracks, Locke showcased her beautifully laid-back style on air. Alongside an acoustic version of her new song, she also performed ‘Drive To Drink’, an older tune from one of her early EPs that she’s re-recorded with her new band for the upcoming album.

On how she approaches making music, Locke explained:

“It usually starts with me messing around on the guitar, if I get something that sounds cool I’ll keep going. Usually the words just come, I might start trying a vocal melody and it kind of comes together.”

Having toured with The Smith Street Band and provided vocals on their single ‘Birthdays’, Locke has also signed to the band’s Pool House Records label. Her second album will be released later this year.

Listen back to Jess’ whole chat with Stephen and her two live tracks above.
