Independent Artist Of The Week :: Szymon

January 6th 2015

Welcome to Independent Artist Of The Week, it’s replacing Unsigned Artist of the Week because sometimes we want to give props to some of the artists on very small labels that are working their butts off to get amazing music off the ground. It’ll be running every Tuesday in 2015, so here’s your first taste.

Independent Artists tend to be ahead of their time.

A few years ago, a man named Szymon Borzestowski created a near complete record with relatively basic software in his bedroom under the moniker of just his first name.

Sadly, he lost his battle with depression before he was able to release it, but having left behind the legacy of his moving and expansive music, those inspired by it worked in the years following to have it heard. Recently they offered up the first single, ‘Katyusha’. The track melds seamlessly into an environment of advanced software and burgeoning electronic music, far more developed than the environment he made it in.

Dramatic and enthralling, layered, building and spritely, this song is like nothing that’s been released yet. I’m going to hazard a guess it’ll inspire a big folk injection into the melodies of future electronic releases and will be a landmark as the beginning of a new genre. Press play, put your arms in the air, close your eyes and spin. I promise it’s worth it.
