Independent Artist Of The Week: Fritz

May 1st 2017

FRITZ is the experimental solo project from Newcastle’s Tilly Murphy. At just 17 years of age she writes, produces and records all of her own fuzz-infused dream pop.

Tilly Murphy has always obsessed over music, but she was first inspired to start making her own after hearing the debut album from Wavves. It’s those noisy lo-fi sounds she loves most, taking inspiration from various bands including Black Tambourine, My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain.

Earlier this year, FRITZ released her self-titled debut album via Bandcamp as a ‘pay what you want’ download. This DIY attitude extends to the way she writes music – experimenting with household objects to create different sound effects; producing unique songs that leave enough space for the instrumentals to do a lot of the talking. It’s dark at times, particularly on ‘Iris’, which features her friend Joel, aka treasuretroves.

Lyrically, we’re given an insider look into the brain of a 17-year-old in 2017. The track ‘YUK!’ takes us on a journey through the gross world of glandular fever. Unlike its title suggests, the vocals are sweet, the pace is persistent and it’s got far more energy than a sick teen. This young lady knows where it’s at.
